Fighter Subclass for 5e
Only one thing counts toward the Thief-Taker's Momentum, and that's how much closer they actually got to the target. The route they took doesn't enter into it. Backing up for a running start earns nothing, and an enemy who bolts thirty feet has only wound the spring.
The Turn keeps the fighter stuck to anything trying to leave. The Taking makes this the fighter who ends a fight with somebody still breathing, because grappling, restraining and hauling a prisoner off come without the usual costs.
Between fights there's the Book. Put a name in it, ask around, and follow whatever that person left behind. The Chase ships with it too, the one-page shared procedure for pursuits.
