Roll How It Fights.

The book reads two dice left to right, so a 3 then a 5 is entry 35. Here one entry in each band is open. Roll for a band and the book opens there. The other 30 stay locked, and so does every other table in the book.

Tap the dice, or any entry.

Roll, and you get the line exactly as the book prints it.

d66 Prompts for Smarter Monsters

Say the party meets a troll. The stat block has its hit points and its claws, and it has nothing to say about whether this troll goes for the lanterns first or starts guarding one shoulder halfway through the fight. That part is what the four tables in this book are for.

Roll before a fight or during one. There are 144 entries in total, and one of them on How It Fights just reads, "It speaks. For the first time, and it is polite." That table and What It Wants give the creature a plan. The Tell gives it a mark the party will recognize the next time around, and The Turn covers the moment a battle leaves the plan behind.

Every entry leads with a bold catch-word for a quick look mid-fight, then fills out to a full line when there's a breath between rounds. The numbers stay in whatever book you brought to the table. There's no stat block of ours to learn and nothing to convert.
